Keeping Cats Inside is Good for Everyone’s Health

Your cat might gaze longingly out the window, hoping to roam around the neighborhood—but for Fluffy’s health (and yours), it’s best to keep cats inside.

Pet cats who are allowed to go outside are three times more likely to become infected with harmful parasites and pathogens, according to a recent study from the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences at Auburn University in Alabama. Cats can pick up bugs from other cats, the soil or prey animals including birds and mice.

These bugs, which include single-cell parasites and feline roundworm, don’t just affect cats. Infected felines can also transmit them to their owners.

Interestingly, the study found that cats in areas far from the equator are more likely to be infected by a virus or bug if they’re allowed out of doors.

However, that’s not to say that you should let your cats outside if you live closer to the equator. As Kayleigh Chalkowski, the lead author of the study noted, “Basically, no matter where you are in the world, keeping your cat indoors is a great way to keep them healthy from infectious diseases.”
