Cat-Proofing Your Home Before Your New Kitty Arrives

Bringing home a new cat or kitten is an exciting time. You’re in store for a lot of love, joy, laughter, and cuddling (and probably a little bit of yelling) as you and your new friend get to know each other and bond. But you’re also about to take on some new responsibility, since you’ll be in charge of keeping your cat happy and healthy.

The first thing you can do to be a good cat parent is prepare your home for your kitty’s arrival. Here are a few cat-proofing measures you can take to make your space safer and more welcoming for your newest household member!

Remove any potential dangers that could harm your cat.

Cats are very curious creatures who can get into everything. Before you bring yours home, it’s important to make your space safe for them to explore. Pick up and put away any small items they could choke on, cover or hide wiring they might chew, remove any houseplants that are toxic to cats, and check all windows and screens to ensure they’re secure.

Put valuable and tempting objects out of reach.

In their explorations, cats will often leave behind a trail of mess and destruction without a second thought. To minimize the casualties, put away any breakables, collectibles, food items, and cherished belongings within their reach. Don’t forget to check higher up areas like tables, countertops, cabinets, shelves, and furniture, for these items too. You’ll be surprised at the different places where kitties can climb and wriggle themselves into.

Buy and set up essential cat supplies.

Before your cat comes home, you should have everything you need to create a happy and healthy environment for them in place. This includes food, water, food/water bowls, litter, a litter box, litter scooper, cat tree and/or scratch post, toys, special bedding, and grooming tools. Having these items ready to go will also give your cat designated areas to hang out and play, which will hopefully help keep them out of trouble.
