How to Prepare Your Home for a New Cat

If you think moving is stressful, just think of how your cat feels! Cats can become very attached to familiar surroundings and prefer not to alter their routines. A change of environment may be difficult for your furry friend, but there are things you can do to help your cat settle into a new space.

Here are a few tips to prepare your home for your new feline friend!

Deep Clean

Cats have a very keen sense of smell, so it’s important to deep clean the house before they move in, particularly if you had a previous cat. Smelling other pets will heighten your cat’s anxiety in the new space. Shampoo the carpets, thoroughly vacuum to remove any traces of fur, and wipe down all countertops.

Be vigilant about picking up items your cat may play with or put in their mouth, such as rubber bands, string, and children’s toys. Secure blind cords and remove all toxic plants! It’s important to completely cat-proof your space before a new kitten arrives. An older, more experienced cat won’t require an extreme amount of cat-proofing.

Prepare a Designated Cat Area

Moving to a new place can be stressful for cats because they have no sense of the territory. Designate and prepare one room as a special cat room, where your cat can retreat if they get overwhelmed by their new surroundings. This room can be a laundry room, closet, or bathroom, as long as it’s stress-free and cozy. Once your cat begins to feel comfortable, you can introduce them to other rooms in the house.

Give Them Places to Hide

Having different hiding options is key in helping a cat settle in a new environment. These places can be under a bed, a wardrobe, or even a custom cat townhouse! Fill their space with comfy pillows and blankets to ensure maximum comfort. When your cat goes to one of their hiding places, it’s best to leave them alone. They’ve most likely gone there to feel safer and more secure.
